You can be creative around how you use your holiday allowance alongside your designated days off, meaning you can book multiple long trips and holidays every year. Shift work gives opportunities for you to occupy your time where regular 9-5 workers are busy with their jobs. Going to the cinema at non-peak times is also much cheaper. Working on shift allows you to get to the gym when it is quiet or even cheaper being outside of peak hours. Going against the flow of normal commuters heading to work and onsite parking is often available which normal workers would not have access to. The rush hour commute is a thing of the past. Maersk have recognised this and with one week in five set up as a "business working week", this will allow ample time to take on additional training/courses. You can work in enough time to invest in training activities without taking leave for training sessions you can arrange to upgrade your skills with minimal cost to yourself. In shift work it becomes easier as when the next shift starts you can do a handover, thus no need for extra hours you often don't get paid for. In regular working hours, the day is often extended to complete whatever work needs to be done. The working hours are less in shift work as there are by law - enough relaxation time and breaks to make it a comfortable experience. For parents child care costs can be heavily reduced as you can split the time with a partner who is perhaps working a normal 9-5 role. You have time off during the working week to get errands done or make appointments that normally you would have to book holiday for. What are the pros and cons to the employee working in this way? Pros - Convenience:įitting your life around your shifts allows you to have more spare time for interests, hobbies and passions outside of work. The historic trend in tech is to use a follow the sun model but often the off-shored service is a poor relation to providing all the support in-house. It is often seen in a negative light but in certain industry sectors it cannot be avoided, and the world of technology is not alien to this concept.
